Thai VIP Intercity Buses + Thai - Lao International Buses.

Thai VIP Intercity Buses: Route and Timetable information.

This is a listing of the route and timetable information for the highest standard VIP buses covering many different parts of Thailand. These buses have a 1 + 2 seating layout with much wider seats and more legroom. All 24 and 32 seat VIP buses have on board toilets and are air conditioned.

Some buses also have massaging seats and in seat video screens. Most of these VIP buses provide drinking water and snack food on board. I recommend these 24 and 32 seat VIP buses as a more comfortable way of getting to rural Thailand from Bangkok. The ticket costs for these VIP buses ranges from 500 baht to 1200 baht per person per single trip depending distance traveled.

This is an image of a 32 seat double deck VIP intercity bus. Bus type Volvo/Cherdchai B12B. Bus number 927 – 870.

This is an image of the seating and interior of a 32 seat VIP intercity bus. Note the 2 + 1 seating layout for extra comfort. The TV is only used during daylight trips and while waiting to depart the bus terminal.

This is a close up image of the seating on the 32 seat VIP intercity bus. Note the wider seats and extra legroom.

This is an image of another example of a snack box provided to passengers on the VIP buses. This one also contains a small drink as well as sweet snacks and coffee making items.

Below is a listing of the Best VIP buses services to selected destinations across Thailand. To a large number of these listed destinations there are other private bus companies that offer VIP buses to Bangkok. However some of these companies are substandard and you should be careful when booking if there prices are far lower than the other companies offering VIP buses from that destination then its likely their standard is lower too. Both of the companies listed below I have personal experience with and they are of a high standard with clean safe buses.

Nakhon Chai Air bus company. (NCA)

This is a private bus company that operates 24 seat VIP (2+1 layout) and 32 seat (2+2 layout) buses. This is the best of the private VIP bus companies in Thailand. Below is a listing of the timetable and routes. They confusingly market there 24 seat VIP buses as “First class”. When booking check that you are on the 24 seat VIP bus and not on the 32 seat bus.

Udon Thani's Mass Transit System.

After returning from Vientiane Laos. I stopped at Udon Thani for a few days to meet with local friends before returning to Bangkok. During my time in Udon Thani I managed to get some photographs of the local and intercity buses that operate out of Udon Thani.

Background information on Udon Thani.

Udon Thani is a major rural city located approximately 50 km from the Lao border in North East (Isarn) Thailand. The name Udon Thani means “Northern City” It has a population of over 150,000 in its urban area. Udon Thani started out as a small trading outpost which during the 1960s rapidly grew due to a large US air force base being built outside of Udon Thani. This air force base is no longer used by the US but still sees use by the Thai air force and Singaporean air force for training purposes.

Today Udon Thani is growing again with a number of new hotels and shopping centres all opening in the last few years. The urban area is rapidly increasing in density as the economy of Udon Thani improves. Part of Udon's economic growth comes from increasing numbers of older foreigners who relocated to Udon Thani from the US and Europe to retire. They are attracted to Udon Thani by the far lower living costs than Europe as well as access to modern urban infrastructure like shopping centres and hospitals. Many of them are also attracted to Udon for the better climate and ease of finding a local companion to live with them.

Despite its popularity and economic growth Udon Thani has to compete with two other Issarn cities these are Khon Kaen and Korat. Both of these cites are larger than Udon Thani in population with quite different economies. They are less reliant on tourists and older retired foreign residents. Khon Kaen is a education and research hub for the Issarn region. Where as Korat is more of a manufacturing base for the Issarn region.

The urban layout of Udon Thani is fairly typical for a rural Thai city with a spread out innercity commercial area with large mostly residential area around the innercity. But like most Thai cities there is no defined central business area. The city has a fairly high urban density for its small size.

The mass transit system of Udon Thani is made up of mostly high frequency “truck – bus” services with only one full size bus route that uses very old non aircon buses. Besides the urban mass transit Udon Thani has two large bus terminals that service its large rural hinterland and link Udon Thani to other cities in Issarn as well as Bangkok. The main bus terminal is located in the innercity and provides service to all parts of Issarn as well as Bangkok. The other bus terminal is located a 20 minute bus ride to the north west of Udon Thani. This bus terminal provides service to Chiang Mai and other northern Thailand destinations as well as Loei. This terminal is fairly quiet compared to the main terminal.

As with the Vientiane Laos topic I will start by posting some images of Udon Thani itself so people can see what the city looks like before going into the Mass transit images of Udon Thani.

1. This is general view of the innercity area of Udon Thani. Taken from the 8th floor of a hotel in the centre of Udon Thani. The modern shopping centre is clearly evident.

2. This is another general view of the innercity area of Udon Thani. Taken looking towards the older section of the city. As can be seen the urban density is fairly high in this part of Udon Thani.

These services are frequent throughout the day but stop running at 7pm. As to why they do is unknown but these services do start as early as 3am daily. This last section of the topic is devoted to the new Udon Thani bus terminal in the north western suburbs of Udon Thani.
